1. Who must accept card payment?

All traders and service providers (legal entities) who deposit cash receipts greater than €10,000 (equivalent in lei) in a year must accept payment by card, POS or other electronic methods.

2. What is the annual threshold value?

The threshold is 10,000 euros equivalent in lei in a calendar year. If it is exceeded, the mandatory POS is imposed starting from the following quarter.

3. Since when does the obligation apply?

The law provides for the implementation of the SOP in the next quarter the one in which the threshold of €10,000 was exceeded, in total cash receipts.

4. How should card payment be made?

Merchants must ensure payment by credit cards debit, credit/prepaid, including by payment contactless or other electronic solutions with POS.

5. What happens if you refuse to pay by card?

Refusal to accept card payment after exceeding the threshold may result in fines between 20,000 and 50,000 lei.
